Maroon Wrestlers Fall to Bullis

The Varsity wrestling team hosted Bullis for an IAC dual meet in the Bocock Wrestling Cage.
Missing two starters, the Maroon faced a challenging task in taking on the Bulldogs, traditionally a strong wrestling program. Despite losing by a final score of 47-21, the Maroon continued to show growth as both competitors and wrestlers. In particular, the coaches were pleased with the manner in which the team showed more aggressiveness on their feet and fought harder from the bottom position.

Match notes:
  • Chad Calderwell '20 had perhaps his best win of the season as won an 8-6 decision in a match that saw several changes in momentum. After getting to his feet to tie the match late in the third period, Calderwell scored the winning takedown in the final seconds. The difference, however, was his toughness on bottom and his ability to stay off his back.
  • Brenton Smith '21  impressed both the coaches and his teammates with his performance. Wrestling a more experienced opponent, Smith demonstrated genuine grit from the bottom position. In particular, his refusal to get pinned is something we hope will be emblematic of the team.
  • Peter Mathews '19 won an exciting bout with a second period pin. After giving up two early takedowns, Peter looked over-matched. He stayed patient, kept working and won a scramble from bottom that ended up in a reversal to a pin.
  • Jay Kim '19 and Yoyo Lu '21 both scored the first takedowns in their bouts before losing by fall. Liu's bout was a step forward as scored off an offensive shot and then went to work trying to turn his opponent with a cross-face cradle.
  • Chineme Agulanna '21 and William Smith '19 earned points for the Maroon by picking up forfeits. Bullis actually had a wrestler in Smith's weight but chose to move him to 195 rather than compete.
  • Lebby Clement '18 competed against one of the Bulldog’s stronger wrestlers. He almost scored the first points, countering a shot and getting into a front headlock position. After a long scramble in which Lebby showed improved mat sense, his opponent ended up getting the upper hand.
  • Facing a strong and athletic opponent, Christian Wright '18 hand-fought and battled for position for much of the first period before losing a headlock position.
