Maroon Ties for Second in Alexandria City Wrestling Meet

The Alexandria City meet was hosted at Bishop Ireton High School.
Each of the four high schools in the city compete in dual meets, with the best overall team record determining the winner. Missing two starters, Episcopal faced an uphill battle as they were forfeiting a total of five weight classes. In actual bouts contested, EHS wrestlers went 9-14 on the day, as the Maroon defeated St. Stephen’s St. Agnes 36-30, and lost to both Bishop Ireton 63-18 and TC Williams 48-30. Host Bishop Ireton finished 3-0 as TC Williams, St. Stephens & St. Agnes and Episcopal each finished with a 1-2 record. This left Episcopal in a 3-way tie for second place.

Event notes:
  • William Smith '19 and Jay Kim '19 each went 3-0 in the event. Smith continued to push himself on his feet as he finished with three falls. Kim finished with two falls and a forfeit; his win against TC Williams came as a result of a well-executed gator roll.
  • Alex Brown '18 went 2-1 with two falls. Though he was dominant in both wins, his loss against St. Stephens might have been his most well-wrestled bout as he continued to close the gap against an opponent who beat him twice previously. He took this bout all the way into sudden victory, earning him praise from the Saints coach.
  • Christian Wright '18 shook off falls in his first two bouts to win his TC bout by fall. More notable than the fall, however, was his improved technique on his feet as he scored two nice offensive takedowns.
  • Brenton Smith '21 wrestled his best bout of the season against TC, taking his opponent down and turning him three times to go out to a 12-0 lead before winning by injury default.
  • Lebby Clement '18, Chineme Agulanna '20, Conrad Suppes '20 and Yoyo Lu '21 each earned points for the Maroon by picking up forfeits. Though he lost his other two bouts, Agulanna continues to wrestle with a fearlessness that is inspiring.
  • Chad Calderwood '20 faced the toughest competition of the day as went 0-3. He competed well, losing close decisions and taking TC ‘s best wrestler deep into the third period.
  • In exhibition action, Jacob Morgan '20 got the day off to a strong start as he won by fall to earn his first pin of the season. He took his Saints opponent down, secured a half-nelson and then adjusted position well to earn the fall with only five seconds on the clock in the first period.
