Wrestlers Ride Out The Heights

The Varsity wrestling team opened their dual meet season this past week competing at home with back-to-back events, wrestling Randolph-Macon and Potomac School on Wednesday, then taking on the Heights school on Thursday. The Maroon came out of the events with a 2-1 record, beating RMA 30-24, and The Heights 36 - 12, while losing to the Potomac School 33-40.
Match Notes from Heights:
  • The Maroon beat an undermanned Heights team as Chineme Agulanna '20, Chad Calderwood '20, Alex Brown '18, and Christian Wright '18 all earned forfeits. In the five bouts actually contested, the Maroon went 2-3 but nonetheless competed strongly:
  • Jay Kim '19 competed against a returning Maryland state place-winner, taking him the distance and only surrendering a major decision.
  • Brenton Smith '21, in only his second bout ever, lost a narrow 5-4 decision. His best moment was a 2nd period takedown that brought him within one point of his Heights School opponent. It is worth noting that Brenton did not surrender any back points in his bout.
  • Jacob Morgan '19 wrestled his strongest match of the year, going up 4-1 after earning two first period takedowns using a “low-level lift.” In addition, he nearly put his opponent to his back in the 2nd period. Though he lost the bout, it was a real step forward for him.
  • Lebby Clement '18 earned his first varsity win with a first period pin. After a low single, he broke his opponent down, dug out a hammer-lock and turned him for the fall.
  • Peter Mathews '19 also earned a pin for the Maroon. After a scoreless first period, he got out of bottom, finished a single leg take-down and turned his opponent with a cross-face cradle.
