Varsity Field Hockey Climbs to 2-0

Lone Maroon goal in first half is the difference-maker against St. Anne's Belfield

On September 10, the Varsity Field Hockey team made the trek down to Charlottesville to square off against St. Anne’s Belfield, winning their second game of the season by a score of 1-0.

Coming off of Thursday’s win against Madeira, Maroon immediately took control of the game, maintaining possession for most of the half. Eleanor Winants '18 put Maroon on the board midway into the first half, dodging past defenders at the dash to enter the circle and fire a shot past the keeper for a one-goal advantage. The Maroon’s defensive line, including Liza-Banks Campagna '17 and Maddie Korkowski '17, was relentless, only forfeiting one defensive corner in the first half.

Coming out of halftime, Maroon continued to fight for possession and control the pace of the game. The Maroon forwards continued to test the goalkeeper in the attacking circle. Jane Hill '20, making her Varsity debut on the midfield and forward line, helped to possess the ball in the midfield with her fellow teammates. Erin Phillips '18 received a five-minute yellow card with 19:21 left on the clock, but returned forcefully to finish the game.

Margaret Collett '18 swept the field as a midfielder and forward during the game, making several dangerous runs into STAB’s circle to put the defense on their heels and several important tackles to prevent counter attacks. For her effort and skill displayed during Saturday’s match, Collett was named Player of the Game.

Goalie Halsey Ziglar '19 helped the team earn the second shut-out of the year, making three saves for the team.
