Singing Our Way into Spring Break

Students and faculty headed off to Spring Break with a little more pep in their step after the annual Music Vespers service. "This service is about the power of music," Assistant Chaplain The Rev. Richmond Jones explained, "Whether it's a time that songs took root in us and the trips we take back to those formative moments, the lessons songs teach us through their beauty and messages, or the ways in which music impacts us most when it's experienced live and in community, there is a transcendent and often ineffable quality to music. The beat can get us up and bobbing our heads, the bassline can get our hips and arms moving, the melody can tell us a story, and the lyrics can take us to different times and places."

The evening’s performance comprised four songs, all sung by students with arrangements ranging from Led Zeppelin’s "Going to California” to Disney classic "A dream is a wish that your heart makes" to "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye, and "Snow" by Zach Bryan. Lindsay Dunlap '23, Lara Georgia Guimarães Noronha '23, Mac Halm '25, and Claude Morris '23  each prefaced their respective selection with a personal story about their song choice citing and the significance of the lyrics or the memorable first moment they first heard the song.

Of her experience, Dunlap said, "I was insanely nervous when I went up to speak. I'm not very confident with public speaking. Still, the topic and song mean so much to me that I really wanted to share it with this community that I value so much. The highlight of that evening was talking to my friends afterward and having them be so excited for, and proud of, me. I'm so thankful to have had the chance to share a part of me with the Episcopal community and have had so much support throughout the experience!"
