State Champions: Boys Varsity Lacrosse Claims Victory!

By Coach Scott Conklin

The Episcopal boys' lacrosse team faced off against No. 1-seeded and No. 22 nationally ranked Paul VI in the 2021 VISAA Championship on Saturday afternoon in Chantilly, Va. The Maroon were focused and determined to win their first state title since 2011, and they came out strong in the first quarter as Bear White ‘21 and Jack Hines ‘21 contributed first quarter goals. The defense was dominant throughout the game and especially in the first half as the zone defense gave the Panthers trouble all day. Thomas Gibert ‘21, Lawson Laverty ‘21, Andrew Lehman ‘22, Graham Riddle ‘22, Alec Riddle ’22, Zack Ough ‘22, Jake Crowley ‘21, Aiden Nelson ‘23, and Jack Dupuis ‘23 combined to perfectly execute coach Blunt’s defensive game plan.

Nate Kabiri '23 was special on the offensive side of the field and contributed two goals and four assists. His behind-the-back gem at the buzzer at the end of the third quarter will go down as an all-time great play in EHS lacrosse history. Victor Salcedo ‘22 was excellent from the face-off X winning eight draws and contributing a big assist. James Greene ‘21 controlled the ball for much of the game and was key in the clearing game. Willem Albert ‘22 and Andrew Caslow ‘21 had huge fourth-quarter goals to extend the Maroon lead to four each time, and Caulley Deringer ‘23 contributed a goal and ran out the clock to kick off the championship celebration.

The win gave the Maroon their third state title, as they joined the 1992 and 2011 championship teams.

Congrats to all of the boys on an incredible season in which they dealt with adversity at every corner. They made the coaches and community proud!
