Solid Defense Helps Girls Varsity Defeat Huskies

Thursday evening witnessed another matchup between two hungry ISL teams as EHS looked to avenge its December 7th loss to Flint Hill. Thanks to their defense prowess, the squad was able to do just that, securing a 44-41 victory over the Huskies.

Maya Thompson '20 netted the team's first points of the game off a beautiful floater in the paint. After a defensive stop, Dymin Gerow '20 sprinted down the floor and found Ryan Shepherd '21 for a wide-open three. Gerow then found Shepherd for another layup that extended the team's lead to five. The deadly defensive duo of Gerow and Marian Turnbull '22 took away halfcourt opportunities for the Huskies, a team that crushed EHS weeks earlier with their hot three-point shooting. In the second quarter, the teams traded baskets and stops, and EHS ultimately earned a slight 18-15 edge going into halftime.

The third quarter saw some of Episcopal's best defense of the year, as the team converted their collective length and speed into points. First, Cayla Williams '21 stole the ball and found Gerow for two on a perfect full-court pass. Seconds later, Shepherd turned a steal into an uncontested layup to further extend the team's lead. Williams then sank a tough layup in the paint before finding Gerow on the next possession for another Episcopal bucket. The Maroon's 12-0 run totally blanked the Huskies and forced two timeouts from their opponent. Hannah Boone '22 was a solidifying presence in the paint with a slew of important rebounds and teammate Minta Brice '21 helped solidify the point guard position. As all good teams do, however, Flint Hill staged a fourth quarter comeback of their own. A series of critical rebounds and stops allowed EHS to hold on to a 44-41 victory down the stretch, avenging a loss to the Huskies earlier this season.
