The EHS spring play, “You Can’t Take It With You,” had a great run of weekend shows, playing to three sold-out houses in the Breeden Blackbox Theater in the Ainslie Arts Center.
Cast and crew were greeted with uproarious laughter and welcoming, well-deserved applause as they took on the 1937 Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy centered around an eccentric family whose madcap routine is disrupted by the daughter’s engagement to a strait-laced Wall Street gentleman.
As the matriarch of the Sycamore family, Savanna Zumbado ’19 was a standout, bringing a crazed quirkiness to the role and production. Flynn Donnelly ’21 received huge laughter on every one of his entrances as the scene-stealing Boris Kolenkov, a Russian ballet teacher. Seniors Christian Hudspeth and Shaunjaney Bryan brought sincerity and truth to their roles as the two lovebirds, helplessly in love in spite of their families' differences. As Grandpa, Spencer Ashford ’20 became the heart of the show, acting as the voice of reason and supplying some subtle, understated comedy.
“With just a few weeks to put 'You Can’t Take It With You' up, everyone involved should be extremely pleased with their accomplishment,” said director Michael Windsor. “It was a show to remember, for sure!”
Senior Carson Arp served as assistant director. “Carson provided tremendous creative input and gave insightful notes to actors throughout the rehearsal process,” Windsor said.
