Boys End Climbing Season in Fifth Place

Sunday marked the final meet in the climbing season. The WAICL Championship meet was held at Earth Treks, Crystal City—a neutral gym where no league participants had climbed all season long. The gym rented out the space for all eleven schools to bring their top six male and top six female climbers and compete in an exciting final competition. The top five scores from each team would count towards the team total, dropping the low score just as in the regular season meets. Each climber had two hours to try to complete his or her best two top-rope routes and best two bouldering problems.
Kidron Kollin '19 and Thomas Adkins '20 tied for 10th place individually with 52 points. Kollin climbed dual 5.11a routes and a pair of impressive V6 boulders. Adkins also matched V6's and sent 5.11b and 5.10d top-ropes. Paul Pivirotto '19, fresh off of a nearly season-long ankle injury fought for 5.11b, 5.10d, and two V4's for 40 points. The trio of freshman varsity climbers—Sam Lipschutz '22, Bobby Zahorsky '22, and Yoyo Wang '22—climbed like they were seasoned pros and gained valuable experience for future years in the nerve wracking championship. Lipschutz earned an outstanding 50 points on 5.11a, 5.11b, V5, and V6 climbs. Zahorsky scored 40 with two 5.11a's and two V4's.

Wang was the sixth backup score at a strong 37 points on 5.11a, 5.10d, V3, V4. The boys earned 5th place in the team category, beating three other teams including Woodberry Forest by 38.
