Maroon Wrestling Beats Georgetown Prep on the Mats

The varsity wrestling team opened their IAC season with their biggest league win in recent memory as they beat Georgetown Prep 37-30. An exciting meet that came down to the last bout, the Maroon competed strongly up and down the line-up, scoring the first points in all but three bouts.
Starting at 152, Hays Talley '21 faced a returning IAC champion. He defended the first attack as he tried to get to a front headlock, but the experience of his opponent was too much to overcome as he lost by first period fall.  Gilbert Amason '20 responded at 160 with a dominating performance on top as a quick takedown, and then turned his opponent several times before pinning him with 15 seconds remaining in the first period. Wrestling in only his second varsity match, Collin Fitzpatrick '19 faced a wrestler who was fresh off a fourth-place finish at the Hub Cup tournament the weekend prior. Fitzpatrick moved well and worked to maintain good position, but did not have an answer for the offense of his opponent.

At 182, Bear Matheson '20 faced off against a returning IAC finalist. He consistently maintained good position and effectively defended the shots by his opponent. Down 3-1 in the third, Matheson earned an escape in the final minute, took a shot in the closing seconds and earned a takedown just before time ran out to win a pivotal match 4-3.  William Smith '19 added to the team score at 195 as he earned a 14-6 major decision. He scored four takedowns in his bout, the last of which came in the closing seconds giving the Maroon an extra team point.

The Maroon forfeited 220 in order to bump Max Meyer '20 to 285 where he did not disappoint. Meyer built a 9-1 in the third period and then closed the deal as he countered a shot with a cross-face, pancaked his opponent and earned a fall with 15 seconds left in the bout.  At 113, Clay Sailor '21 scored the first takedown on a nice high crotch. Working for the fall in the second period, Sailor got reversed and then turned with a half to lose by fall. Chineme Agulanna '20 got the Maroon back on the board at 120 as he earned four takedowns on the way to an 11-4 decision. He continues to excite the crowd with his varied and creative offense.

Jay Kim '19 opened his bout at 126 with a five-point move, hitting a cross-face to pancake that earned him a takedown and near-fall.  Holding on to a 6-4 lead late, Kim struggled to get out on bottom and ended up losing by fall. Victor Salcedo '22 put together a nice match at 132, showing both explosiveness and an ability to scramble. After a long scramble for his second takedown, Salcedo turned his opponent twice before earning at pin at 1:27. Stefan Olsen '21, after making the effort to drop to 138, picked up valuable team points by earning a forfeit. With the Maroon up 34-30 going into the last bout, Nick Carosi '22 showed grace under pressure as he earned a reversal and near fall in the second period to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead.  In the third period with a 5-3 lead, he rode his opponent for a minute and then successfully defended multiple shots in the last minute to secure a 5-4 decision and the first Episcopal dual meet win over Georgetown Prep since 2001.
