Wes Moore Receives 2017-18 Integrity in Action Award
On Thursday, May 24, Episcopal High School welcomed Wes Moore as the 2018 Integrity in Action lecture speaker.
Wes Moore is the author of The Other Wes Moore and The Work, and CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, a poverty-fighting organization that funds schools, food pantries, and shelters in New York City. Moore previously served on Robin Hood’s Veterans Advisory Board, which brought together leaders from the military, nonprofit organizations and government to connect veterans and their families living in poverty to housing, job training, education, counseling, and health services. Moore is also a television producer and political analyst; he hosted Beyond Belief on the Oprah Winfrey Network and servesas the executive producer and a writer for Coming Back with Wes Moore on PBS.
In his address to the EHS community, Moore told the story of growing upin Baltimore, Md., and how the events of his early childhood led him to choose a path of service to others. He argued that the most important goal in life is to find a cause to stand up for, and to find purpose and passion through hard work.
The Phillips Lecture on Integrity in Action honors Allen C. Phillips, Jr., a distinguished faculty member whose devotion to character, integrity, and sacrifice is legendary at Episcopal High School. Over his 40-year career, Mr. Phillips taught English and coached the football, basketball, and baseball teams. During this tenure, he served as Episcopal’s dean of students for 26 years and as faculty advisor to the Honor Committee. Mr. Phillips retired from Episcopal in 1994, remaining an active member of the EHS community until his death in November 2007.
The Phillips Lecture on Integrity in Action was established in 2000 to honor Mr. Phillips. It was created by John Burress ’54, John Walker ’79, Ed Walker ’85, and then-Headmaster Rob Hershey.
