1993-94 Girls’ Basketball Team

In just the third year of coeducation, EHS won its second ISL Championship of the school year when the girls’ basketball team won their division. The Maroon were undefeated in league play, dominating the competition with an average margin of victory of 24 points. The team went on to the Virginia Women’s Invitational Tournament, a precursor to the VISAA State Tournament and advanced to the semifinals, where they fell to Liberty Christian, ending an 18-game winning streak. They rebounded from this loss to win the consolation game in overtime to finish third and complete the season with a 20-2 record.

“We were a team of outspoken young women whose confidence came way before the winning,” Patrice Scott Williams ’95 said. “We supported each other, and we were always laughing…always. I still draw on that energy when I need to step up or when I need to remember to just enjoy the process. I’m forever grateful to have been part of that team.”

Danielle O’Banion ’97 (HOF 2009) led the team in scoring, and earned First-Team All-ISL honors, while Gray MacNair King ’96 (HOF 2007) and Lisa Welker ’95 were named Second-Team and Coach Kaaren Andrews was selected as the league’s Coach-of-the Year.

“The 1993-94 girls’ basketball team is one of my all-time favorite teams,” O’Banion said. “We were an eclectic mix of fierce competitors from varied backgrounds with one of the best pregame warm up mixes in the ISL. Goes to show what having fun and competing together can do.”
