Citations for 2020 Inductees to Cum Laude Society

Each year, Episcopal's Cum Laude Society inducts its new members in a ceremony featuring testimony from current members about the qualities that make the newcomers special. Here are the citations honoring the new members for 2020.

Gilbert Amason ’20 (citation by Cecilia Moore ’20)
I can say with utmost certainty that Gilbert is the very picture of a leader in all parts of life at Episcopal. Mr. McGowan writes that Gilbert “maintain[s] a flawless work ethic”; he encourages his peers to tackle their obstacles not only with hard work and determination, but also with honor and integrity. He is someone who pursues opportunities to their fullest end. For example, Gilbert began taking arabic as a Global Online Learning class during his junior year. That same summer, he traveled to Morocco with the National Security Language Initiative, where he took classes and stayed with a Moroccan family for eight weeks. As a monitor, tutor, and sports captain, Gilbert leads selflessly and asks, “Hey, how are you?” with the full intention of actually hearing how you are feeling in that exact moment. Above all, I am most proud to call Gilbert my friend. Congratulations, Gilbert!

Johnny Barrett ’21 (Tommy Nguyen ’20)
There is little to say about Johnny that is not already known: He is an exceptional student, a competitive athlete, and a great friend to many. His work ethic is second to none, and it shows in Johnny’s work, which always exceeds expectations. Not only that, he demonstrates time and time again that he can lead his peers with both confidence and humility, regardless if it is in the classroom or on the field. His friends and peers can unequivocally declare that Johnny’s presence in the classroom is not just appreciated but wanted. The pièce de résistance is that he is truly a joy to be around simply because he is a remarkable person. With his academic prowess, collaborative skills, and the personality to back it all up, there’s not a doubt in my mind Johnny will find success in his endeavors sooner or later. Congratulations, Johnny.

Wardie Cammack ’20 (Claire Boehm ’20)
The Honor Code at Episcopal is something that the School has elevated and prioritized since its inception. I can say without any hesitation that Wardie Cammack is the most honorable person I know and, fittingly, a member of the Honor Committee. She is the perfect embodiment of everything that Episcopal seeks to instill in its students. Wardie is incredibly passionate. Whether she is serving as a head tutor in the Writing Center, consoling a friend, working tirelessly on a project or paper, or engaging in a class discussion, Wardie puts all of her energy into what she is doing. According to her former teacher Ms. Echko, “She’s a dream to teach. Working with her in the Writing Center feels like working with another colleague.” Her curiosity and passion for learning bring her all over the world, as she traveled to France as a part of Episcopal’s study abroad program last summer and will be attending University of St. Andrew’s in Scotland this fall. No matter what Wardie decides to devote her time to in the future, she will undoubtedly achieve without ever compromising her honor, grace, and kindness. Congratulations and welcome to the Cum Laude Society, Wardie.

Helen Chen ’21 (Cindy Xin ’20)
I am excited to welcome Helen Chen into the Cum Laude Society. A caring friend, a hard-working student, a talented violinist, and a committed community member, Helen has taken on many identities at EHS. As a student, she has demonstrated unparalleled work ethic and the willingness to take on challenges. Outside of class, she is an inspiring and supportive friend, who brings positivity and enthusiasm to every corner of the community. Helen is also the president of the Manga Club, drawing all manga lovers together to create magic. What’s more, she has fully committed to tuning her music skills as a violinist. I believe we can all recall a time when we are touched by her music. For your hard work, thoughtfulness and compassionate character, Helen, welcome to the Cum Laude Society.

Gigi Friedman ’21 (Sunny Miller ’20)
Gigi possesses an astounding ability to balance her distinguished academic success with great humility. Her inquisitive and hard-working nature have earned her the praise and respect from both her classmates and teachers alike. Mrs. Gomez-Goodnow writes, “Her ability to tease out and provide accurate analysis of complex themes on a variety of topics is impressive and proof that Gigi continually works…to increase her overall level of comprehension in Spanish.” While taking Episcopal’s most rigorous courses, Gigi also participates in various aspects of school life. From the Writing Center to the service league to the field hockey field, she constantly works with an endearing and benevolent nature, never failing to help others — a quality I see and admire every day in our advisory. Her persistence and thoughtfulness have led her to great success thus far, and I simply cannot wait to see what she will accomplish in the future. Congratulations, Gigi!

Sofi Igyan ’21 (Cindy Xin ’20)
I am honored to welcome Sofi Igyan into the Cum Laude Society. Sofi has demonstrated deep intellectual curiosity and thoughtfulness in every learning environment. In the classroom, she is a great collaborator and listener, always inspiring the class to reach a higher level of understanding. Sofi has carried her passion and work ethic into the dance studio as well. As a caring friend and community member, Sofi has touched everyone with her kindness, patience, and compassion. Sofi has also dedicated herself to serving the larger community as the leader of UNICEF club and a frequent participant in service opportunities. I look forward to seeing you accomplish more as a student and a global citizen in the near future. Sofi, welcome to the Cum Laude Society.

Caroline Jones ’20 (Sunny Miller ’20)
Caroline’s radiating positivity and genuine interest in cultivating knowledge allow her to shine in every classroom. Mrs. Schwanda notes, “Caroline’s positive energy and attitude is a gift to her whole Advanced Calculus class. She greets everyone with a smile, and she comes to class ready to learn.” Caroline’s optimistic disposition, both in the classroom and outside the classroom, is contagious. Beyond sheer effervescence, however, Caroline’s earnest, conscientious, and organized nature have fostered her extremely high mastery of the material in her rigorous courses, as well as in her extraordinary achievement in the arts program at Episcopal. Whether drawing a remarkable piece, or speaking Spanish in class, her diligence and ability to challenge herself is rather impressive and a true inspiration to her classmates, as well as teachers — and I am so lucky to call her one of my greatest role models and friends. Congratulations, Caroline!

Charlotte Joyner ’20 (Cecilia Moore ’20)
Charlotte is truly a renaissance woman of academics. She excels on the foreign language floor, taking some of the most challenging Spanish courses the department offers. Last summer, she travelled to Chile, where she attended the Villa Maria Academy and lived with a host family, demonstrating her skills in Spanish and her perseverance when facing new challenges. Ms Pugh writes that she is “willing to listen with an open mind, consider others’ beliefs without necessarily changing her own, and take risks in her writing.” As a recipient of the Sewanee Award for Excellence in Writing, Charlotte is also an accomplished writer; her talents are perhaps best showcased in the Writing Center, where she serves as a dedicated tutor. She is the first to offer help to a classmate in need, and her inquisitive mind enhances the learning experiences of those around her. Welcome, Charlotte, and congratulations!

Christopher Kim ’21 (South Wallace ’20)
Chris and I have been in the same math classes together since he first arrived as a freshman in Honors Algebra 2 Trig, and from the very start, I knew one thing for sure about him. He will be one of the most successful people I will ever meet — no pressure, Chris. This is not only due to his sharp intellect, consistent determination, and thoughtful organization that has earned him top grades, but also due to his strong sense of kindness and honor. Chris is not only one of those students who is willing to study for tests and work on problem sets with you, as he has done for every member of our class for the past three years. He goes above and beyond to help others. For example, for our final problem set this April, Chris made several of his own “Zooms” and shared them with the class to show others his thought process working out the difficult problems. Chris’s virtual guidance made them feel easy. Chris not only excels in mathematics but also in English, impressing the likes of Ms. Echko with his creative writing. Outside the classroom, Chris is a prefect on Hummel, and an important piece to the Vestry and TableTalk. Congratulations on Cum Laude, Chris, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you.

Sean Kim ’20 (Killian Vetter ’20)
Sean Kim has always been an exceptional student whose ability to quickly pick up on and utilize concepts is truly impressive. While he often stays quiet in class, his quick mind is most evident in his willingness to help others understand concepts and through study groups he organizes on the weekends. The combination of Sean’s quick mind and collaborative attitude have led him to great success so far and will continue to benefit him in the future. Congratulations, Sean.

Leo Kong ’21 (Mike Yang ’20)
Leo utilizes his unbelievable academic gifts to excel in all of his classes. His intellectual strength and curiosity allow him to not be limited in the confines of the class subject but brings his knowledge across disciplines. As Mr. Thompson wrote, “Leo was an excellent student of microeconomics. His mathematical aptitude, coupled with a strong sense of how markets work, allowed him to really show his strengths in this class.” Part of Leo’s ability is his humility. He does not let his knowledge and presence overshadow his peers. He never refuses to provide assistance to other classmates when they are in need. Leo helps to create an excellent learning environment and it has been an honor for me to be in his class. His capabilities will push him far in the future. Congratulations, Leo.

Owen Krivacek ’20
(Tommy Nguyen ’20)
Owen is truly special. A model student in and out of the classroom, Owen exudes a firm desire to learn and consistently backs it up with his earnest disposition. Those who have had the pleasure of being in the same class as Owen recognize his diligence and natural knack for leadership. He consistently asserts himself as one of the strongest students in his classes, yet never fails to remain humble. Owen further contributes to the Episcopal community not only through his work as a math/science tutor, but also as a team player on the soccer field. I am certain that his drive will inevitably realize his aspirations. Congratulations, Owen.

Lawson Laverty ’21 (David Zeng’ 20)
Lawson is smart. He shows his intelligence by taking the most challenging courses as a junior, and while he is totally unfazed, he shines in them.
Lawson also works smart. Through a keen spirit of collaboration, he is willing to share his own wisdom and humbly absorb the ideas from his peers equally. As Mr. Berry writes, “Lawson strikes the perfect balance between defending his own approach to each problem and trying to learn from the approaches of his peers.” With his talent and intelligence, Lawson will definitely see a bright future success. Congratulations, Lawson!

Hayoung Lee ’20 (Karen Zhang ’20)
Introspection is her greatest strength. This student masterfully combines her intellect and grasp of challenging topics with the tendency to listen and reflect. Her drive to pursue her passions often go beyond the classroom — you can find those efforts best captured in her multimedia art pieces and her dance performances. She leads with quiet resolve, but when she speaks, her words demand attention. Mr. Thompson writes that she is “an eager participant in discussions, and her voice add[s] a thoughtful and solution-based approach to each of our economic problems.” This student has inspired many with her creativity, drive, and perseverance. Honored to have spent three years as her roommate and four years as her friend, I know that she will put her academic excellence and artistry to good use. Congratulations, Hayoung Lee!

Rachel Marsh ’21 (Claire Boehm ’20)
Humility, kindness, and dedication are just a few words that come to mind when the name Rachel Marsh is mentioned. Though naturally reserved, Rachel’s actions and personal accountability speak especially loud. Any person who has had a class with Rachel knows that her assignments are consistently completed with plenty of time to spare, her work is always concise and of a high quality, and she is ready at any time to help a peer who may be struggling with the material. Rachel’s enthusiasm expands to many areas of her life, as she is a talented artist, an editor of the yearbook as a junior, and was even selected as one of two students to travel to Chile and participate in one Episcopal’s coveted study abroad programs. If Rachel sets her mind to achieve something, the question is never whether or not she will, but rather when she will. Congratulations and welcome to the Cum Laude Society, Rachel.

Sofiia Mikadze ’20 (Alli Boehm ’20)
As stated by Dr. Dixon, “Sofiia Mikadze’s outstanding participation in German has been so exceptional that television crews from her home in Ukraine were dispatched to record her presence in the class and send a report back to Kiev to be broadcast on local TV — true story. That is what a great student Sofiia has been. ´Nuff said.” Sofiia is a wonderful presence in every class. I have had German class with her for the past two years, and she is steadfast in her enthusiasm, positivity, determination, and eagerness to learn. Sofiia is also an extraordinarily accomplished musician, showing again her desire to learn and develop new skills. She has also participated in EHS theater productions. While Sofiia has only been here for two years, her presence in classes and on campus has made a large impact on both her peers and teachers. Congratulations, Sofiia.

Arianna Otoo ’21 (Mike Yang ’20)
An incredibly talented student who brings all her passion to her academic studies, Arianna seems to have a natural aptitude for her classes. She couples her talent and passion with hard work and a remarkable humility. She is also never reluctant to give a helping hand to her peers. Dr. Kim Olsen wrote about Arianna: “Once in a while a student comes along who is so insightful that her peers universally recognize her as the line leader, the one who will be the beacon to lead us to the answer, regardless of the complexity of the question. Arianna is such a student, but she combines her talent with an amazing sense of humility and wanting to share her success with others.” With her capability, Arianna does not shy from exploring her interests. Outside the classroom, Arianna is also an excellent percussionist. It has been an honor of mine to be classmates with Arianna. She has achieved a lot in her time at Episcopal, and her characteristics renders her to be an incredible member of the society in the future. Congratulations Arianna.

Britney Parkinson ’21 (Alli Boehm ’20)
Humility is a trait that many strive for, but few people truly embody. Britney Parkinson is one of those few. She never talks about her academic successes, although there are surely a prolific number of them. Dr. Krivacek writes that she has never had a student quite like Britney. “She is a star in her Advanced Biology class. Her fellow students look to her for guidance, and rightly so. Her steady presence and reliable contributions lend balance to her balance. Britney works hard, and she knows her stuff.” I had Advanced Biology with Britney this year, and no matter what life threw at her, she was always on task or even ahead of everyone else. While Britney clearly shines in the classroom, her contributions to other areas of school life cannot be overlooked. She is also an amazing athlete, having competed on several varsity teams for EHS. Lastly and most important, Britney is extraordinarily kind. She would willingly give you her shirt off her back (or in my case, help me with biology homework). Britney is a phenomenal candidate for the Cum Laude Society, and I am so happy to welcome her. Congratulations, Britney!

Leslie Reyes-García ’21 (Killian Vetter ’20)
Leslie Reyes-García is not only an incredibly bright person, but she also has an incredible sense of justice. When Leslie sees an injustice in the world, she is willing to fight to correct it. The combination of these two traits ensures that all of her work is both interesting and inspiring. These gifts will clearly take her far and help her correct the injustices that plague the world. Congratulations, Leslie.

Clay Sailor ’21 (David Zeng ’20)
Clay is one of the most hard-working students I know, and not just as a head waiter: He constantly challenges himself in difficult classes, where he excels at them. To that, Mr. Rauth writes, “Clay really is the model of an intelligent, kind, and hard-working student.” But not only is he exceptionally smart and hard-working, he also brings his radiating positivity into his classrooms. Ms. Pugh writes, “Clay’s positive energy significantly contributed to this class’s respectful ethos.” Throughout the two years, I’m so grateful to get to know Clay as a student, as well as an incredibly friendly, and funny, advisory brother. His talent and attitude will undoubtedly lead him to future success. Congratulations, Clay!

Wyatt Singletary ’20 (South Wallace ’20)
If you were to be looking for Wyatt in the weekday evening hours on campus, you would not likely find him in the library, or his room, or even Stewart Student Center. Rather, you would find him working diligently in a secluded area of Baker Science Center or Townsend third floor. This speaks to Wyatt’s level of focus on his academics — to put his wonderful gregarious character to the side when it’s time to get his work done. In class, he puts his social skills and positive attitude into action, being a constant contributor to class discussion and welcoming every challenge that comes his way. His approach to his academics combined with his natural brilliance have allowed him to be one of the highest natural achievers in his class. Wyatt is one of my best friends, and I can testify that for as long as I’ve known him, he has never lacked a great amount of modesty about his accomplishments. Outside the classroom, Wyatt is the president of the Student Investment Group, a leader on the football, cross training, and golf teams, and friends with whomever he comes across. Wyatt, congratulations on Cum Laude, and I am excited for the next four years with you at the University of Virginia!

Tallie Steiner ’20 (Missy Brandt ’20)
It is my honor to welcome Tallie Steiner into the Cum Laude Society. I want to start out by saying “thank you.” Thank you for knocking on my door freshmen year when you heard me crying; thank you for always being willing to go over a math problem with me; thank you for being an amazing friend to not only me, but also to this whole community during your past few years on The Holy Hill. Tallie is the type of person that students get excited to see on their class rosters because she brings honed insight, reasoned questions, and a desire to collaborate with others to every classroom she enters. Teachers are equally as excited to have her in their classes, as Ms. Smith notices that her “intellectual curiosity, maturity, and persistent, work ethic are beyond her years.” A unifying force, Tallie worked to build community on Evans dorm this year as a monitor. When she wasn’t in class or working to improve the community, Tallie would undoubtedly be studying and reviewing notes in the back of the library; however, if anyone needed her, she would willingly sacrifice her precious library minutes to help someone out. I am so thankful that I got to spend my time at EHS with Tallie and know she will thrive in future endeavors. Congratulations, Tallie.

Natasha Wanjiru ’20 (Karen Zhang ’20)
If I could describe this student in one word, that word would be “bright.” She exudes a dazzling passion for learning that motivates all those around her, and her intellectual pursuits stem from genuine curiosity, not for the need of a higher letter grade. Ms. Echko writes that her “presence in class [is] invaluable. With a positive attitude, she constructively contribute[s] to our discussion and help[s] make the classroom atmosphere a fun and educational place.” Whether playing on the softball field, working backstage with the tech crew, or speaking during Chapel, this student connects intimately to peers and adults alike. Her vivacious laughter, easy-going humor, and unfaltering kindness never fail to light up a day. Her dedication to social justice, equity, and girls’ education leaves a lasting imprint on the EHS and global community. Natasha Wanjiru, thank you for inspiring us all these past four years. I would like to be the first to say: Congratulations on Cum Laude!

Justin Yi ’21 (Missy Brandt ’20)
I am excited to welcome Justin Yi into the Cum Laude Society. From my time spent with Justin in both our advisory and our math class, it is clear that he is a driven student, and his desire to succeed is palpable; however, mere success does not satisfy Justin. Mr. Courchesne, his poetry teacher, comments on his steadfast commitment to his writing, as he worked “to make every line [he wrote] as perfect as it [could] be.” This work ethic and persistence extends beyond the classroom to the cross country course, the wrestling mat, and the track. In all these spaces, Justin pushes himself to be better, while contributing to the sense of team unity. He also brings his keen analytical skills to the Student Investment Group, the Daemon meetings, and other extracurricular pursuits. Despite the fact that Justin gives so much time and energy to the community, he has a light-hearted attitude and supports his classmates. It saddens me that we do not have time left together on The Holy Hill, but I am eager to see what you accomplish. Congratulations, Justin!
