Students in Molly Pugh’s Protest Literature course have been exploring graffiti and street art as forms of protest and expression. In preparation, each student researched D.C.-based artists and examined the broader debates around graffiti’s purpose and cultural value. To bring their classroom learning to life, the class joined expert Jason Bowers of DCMurals for a guided tour along the Metropolitan Branch Trail and through the NoMa neighborhood. There, students viewed murals and graffiti by artists they had studied, witnessing the impact of street art on D.C.’s walls in bold, vibrant ways.
