Chapel and Spiritual Life | Our Values | Episcopal High School

Something Bigger than Ourselves

Since its founding, Episcopal High School has maintained a commitment to developing the spiritual life of each student. We offer Chapel services three days a week, weekly optional Sunday service with communion, and optional Compline twice a week at the close of the day. We also offer baptism and confirmation to community members seeking that when the Bishop of Virginia visits every spring.

Being an Episcopal school means we seek to serve Christ in all persons and respect the dignity of every human being. We do this by drawing the circle wide to mirror the diversity of our community, including all faith traditions, spiritual seekers, cultures, races, genders, sexual identities, and community members who choose not to participate in organized religion.

Being close to Washington, D.C., we are fortunate to have many houses of worship, including synagogues and mosques, where students can seek an off-campus experience to continue their faith lives while away at the School.

Chapel Services
Three times each week, the entire Episcopal community takes a purposeful pause to gather for community worship and reflection. Services center on traditional sermons delivered by school chaplains, meditation, and informal talks by students and faculty from every faith background. Individuals share experiences, viewpoints, or personal revelations in an environment of abiding closeness and trust. Watch previous services on LocalLive.
Chapel Talks
Some might call them a sermon or a homily, but at EHS, we call them Chapel Talks. Offered by the chaplains, students, community members, and invited guests, each topic resonates differently with the community, and many leave a lasting impression. Check out previous Chapel Talks on LocalLive.
Theologian-in-Residence and Portrait in Faith

The Theologian-in-Residence and Portrait in Faith are annual series designed to offer students, faculty, and friends of EHS the chance to establish a foundation for faith to light their path.

Theologian-In-Residence aims to invite Christian preachers, teachers, and theologians to live in the EHS community for a week.

Portrait in Faith offers powerful stories for the faith lives of invited guests, hoping that students’ lives will be informed, shaped, and inspired by their stories.

These endowed programs, established in 1994 by Reginald E. Rutledge ’51 in honor of his wife, the Rev. Fleming Rutledge, and his family members who attended EHS, recognize these individuals for their steadfastness in combining scriptural teaching with the preaching of a vigorous, contemporary Christianity.

Student Vestry
The Vestry is a student organization that works with the chaplains and strives to help students grow in their relationship with God and the wider community, allowing all students to continue spiritual practices from home while away at school. The Vestry encourages our community to participate in all aspects of chapel life at EHS through its leadership in the space. It creates opportunities for students to explore their beliefs and those of others in a safe environment.
