Students in Jessie George’s Advanced Research Seminar: World War & European Society class have been studying World War I, with a focus on the Paris Peace Conference and how societies around the world have grappled with memorializing their dead. To deepen that learning, the class visited the District of Columbia War Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Observing these spaces firsthand provided students with insight into how memorials convey memory, history, and emotion. After the visits, students applied their observations by designing their own WWI memorials for the National Mall, drawing on lessons learned from the memorials. Stay tuned for an update on the students’ progress on this semester-long project!
