Girls Varsity Tennis Tops Flint Hill 5-2

Maroon emerges victorious in first ISL match of the season
The girls varsity tennis team took had their first ISL AA match yesterday at home against a solid Flint Hill team and came away with a 5-2 victory! This avenged a close 4-3 loss from last year and upped the Maroon's record to 2-0.

Playing without one of our three Lillys (Lilly Schmachtenberger), our lineup shifted a bit from the first match. The four singles matches began, and things looked very close. We actually fell behind in 3 of the 4, but the girls were working to find their groove and consistency.

In the doubles we got off to leads in 2 of the 3 matches, so things were looking tight. First off the court was our newly formed #1 doubles team, Juliana Pierce and Nora Huffines with a thorough and decisive 10-0 win. Flint Hill evened the match up with a win at #2 singles over Avery Legg, who just couldn't find that consistency against her steady opponent.

As the matches progressed, Maddie Davidson and Olivia Armfield steadied themselves, overcame the jitters and a 1-2 deficit, took the 3-3 game and never looked back for a 10-3 victory. Lilly Whitner gave us our 3rd point at #3 singles with a well fought 10-3 win, even though she didn't bring her "A" game. Looking for our 4th and match-clinching win, we found it at #2 doubles, where Kay Finlay and Riley Grover played a solid match and held off a comeback by their Flint Hill opposition for the 10-4 clincher.

Two matches were still in progress in the singles, and Lily Dolan pulled out her first singles match at #4 with a 10-6 result. She was down for the first half of the match and turned it around by playing a smarter, more consistent style of tennis. The final match on the court, the #1 singles match with Gracie Hughes, was an incredibly high-level affair with many momentum swings. Gracie was up early only to fall behind in the middle of the match as her opponent picked up her level, Not to be denied, Gracie battled back and looked like she was ready to finish her off, but it was not to be. An amazing 9-11 match which was Flint Hill's final point. Nice effort Gracie!!

Kate Gray won her exhibition singles handily which ended a good team showing by the girls varsity tennis team! Go High School!
