Maroon Defeats Saints to Become Sleepy Thompson Tournament Champs

Episcopal (2-0) had a quick turnaround as they competed against the tournament hosts, St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School, in Wednesday's championship. The team experienced a bit of a slow start, but the Maroon pulled away in the second half to earn an exciting 72-59 win over their cross-town rival.

Despite falling behind 13 points midway through the second quarter, EHS maintained composure and impressive poise. The Maroon slowly chipped away at the deficit with quick full-court passes and inside-outside movement on in the frontcourt. Haley Sabol '20 continued to dominate the paint, finishing tough shots with contact while ripping down layups. Ryan Shepherd '21 netted quick buckets to infuse life into the team while Cayla Williams '21 brought the crowd to its feet with her well-timed and highly intuitive blocks. Marian Turnbull '22 masterfully distributed the ball in our halfcourt offenses and helped EHS establish a 35-34 lead at the half.

Things started to really gel for the squad in the third stanza. Maya Thompson '20 came alive, sinking three after three after three to extend Episcopal's lead and force a SSSAS timeout. With their backs against the wall, the Saints had no choice but to battle fatigue and lay on their press; this time, however, Episcopal was mentally prepared. Smart passes and quick decisions led to multiple open looks for the Maroon including a rousing three from Dymin Gerow '20 (Gerow's defense was also critical in slowing the scoring efforts of the Saints' typically potent point guard). A late offensive surge by SSSAS in the final four minutes proved fruitless for the tournament hosts; EHS proudly secured the title of tournament champions with a 72-59 win over their rivals.
