Maroon Dazzles With 4-0 Win Before Family Weekend Fans

Playing in the Hummel Bowl before a friendly Family Weekend crowd, girls’ varsity soccer recorded several season bests en route to a 4-0 win over nonconference foe Oakcrest. The four goals were a season high for the Maroon, and goalkeeper Vika Vingireviciute ’21 recorded her first shutout, making five saves. Offensively, Wynne Boggan ’23 had a hand in three goals, scoring two and assisting on another. She leads EHS in scoring on the season, having posted 11 points on four goals and three assists. Episcopal’s first goal came 15 minutes into the game following a sequence of passes that began when outside back Neely Holt ’20 drove with the ball from midfield to deep into the Oakcrest defensive third, then laid off a pass to Katherine Allen ’20 on the right wing. Allen dismantled her defender with a fake, dribbled into the middle around the top of the box, and found the feet of Boggan. The freshman, with her back to the goal, played a simple ball back to Lucy Schmachtenberger ’21. Facing an onrushing Charger player, Schmachtenberger hit a one-time strike into the upper-left corner. The center midfielder, who’s hit from distance all season, was 25 yards from goal. On the second goal, Schmachtenberger snatched a Charger goal kick and sent a high ball back into the defense. When an Oakcrest defender misplayed the ball, Boggan stole it and on her second touch and tucked a shot into that same left corner. The Maroon opened the second half with a dazzling pass sequence. Brice started things off, with a steal at midfield and a pass to Schmachtenberger. Her pass found a wide-open Caroline Garrard ’20, who then teed up a beautifully lofted ball that carried 35 yards over the defense and landed nearly at the feet of an onrushing Allen. The wing midfielder drove with the ball to the end line, then slid a pass across the goalmouth to Minta Brice ’21, who knocked it in with one touch. Boggan, who has worried opponents all year with her hustle and defensive play on the front line, got the last Episcopal goal when she pounced on a Charger miscue, took a touch, and hit a low shot past the Oakton goalkeeper. The Maroon is now 5-3-1.
