Junior Soccer Notches Second Win Against Woodberry This Season

Last season EHS swept their rivals from Orange, Va., although not without some drama, winning the contests 3-1 at home and 2-1 away.
Despite a bench shortened by injury, EHS jumped out to a quick lead, aggressively moving the ball early and earning a goal in the opening two minutes with quality play from two veterans: Will Schenck ’22 sending a through ball from the left wing up the middle for center middie Dylan Sexton ’22 to finish with ease. A few minutes later, two new players would get in on the action – this time from the right wing – with freshman Alex Von Maltzahn ’23 sending a ball to striker Sebastian de Casteja ’22 right on Woodberry’s doorstep. The keeper got glove on the ball, but de Casteja calmly stripped it away and put Episcopal up two points to nil. Woodberry was not without their chances, however, and although keeper Jarin Moses ’22 made several heroic saves, Woodberry soon scored their own goal, leaving Episcopal with a tenuous lead at halftime.

The second half would provide more challenges as Woodberry had figured out their counterattack game, luring the EHS back line high enough for one speedy striker to notch an equalizing goal early in the half. It was a shaky third quarter, but Episcopal settled down and resumed playing with the control and energy they had shown at the beginning of the game. A number of players stepped up and contributed, notably veterans Bobby Zahorsky ’22 with tireless lockdown defense, and Will Halloran ’22, whose skilled touch and nice set pieces created some close chances. Episcopal had taken back the momentum in the game, but time was running out and it looked like they might have to settle for another disappointing tie, when Hunter Hammond ’23 carried the ball into the right corner, juked a defender, and sailed what may have been intended as a cross cleanly over the keeper’s gloves and into the back of the net. Episcopal’s sideline exploded, but focused enough to keep Woodberry at bay for 90 more seconds, earning essentially a walk-off goal to truly (metaphorically) burn the forest. Episcopal will now take a short break for the freshman Burch trip.
