Maroon Fights for Fifth Game, Falls Short

After coming out of the EHS Invite with two wins, the Maroon took to Ainslie once again for their first AA divisional match-up of the season, facing the Hoppers from Georgetown Day School.
GDS is a seasoned team with a strong starting six on the court. EHS came with serious energy during the first set of the match, connecting with hitters and playing scrappy defense to keep the ball off the floor. Serving up a combined 6 aces and 11 kills, EHS won the first game 25-22. Switching side of the court seems to give the Maroon a bit of trouble, and the match against GDS proved no different, as EHS was unable to handle the adjustments made by the Hoppers in game 2.

Despite 14 kills, led by Mary Preston Singletary '20 with 4, EHS was unable to finish the game, dropping the second set 25-27. Settled up at 1-1, EHS worked hard in the third game to pick apart the defense of the Hoppers, but 13 unforced errors ultimately allowed GDS to narrowly escape with the victory in game 3, 23-25. Switching sides of the court once again, the Maroon knew that winning game 4 to force the deciding game 5 was of paramount importance. In the latter stages of the game, EHS held a 22-18 lead. Feeling confident in their skills and execution, the Maroon seemed unbothered by the timely GDS timeout. Unfortunately, the Hoppers stormed back to tie up the game, and the points went back and forth, both teams seeing several game-winning or match-winning points.

After pushing extra points, EHS won the game 28-26, forcing the decisive game 5. Though the battle was long and well fought, GDS ended up the victors in game five, making fewer mistakes than the Maroon and winning the game 15-4, thus winning this crucial AA divisional matchup.
