Softball ends season in first round of ISL tournament

The girls varsity softball team finished of the Spring season with a 3-18 loss in the first round of the ISL softball tournament, against first seeded Flint Hill.
Defensive highlights include pitcher Tiffany Stowers’ ’20 change up that caught more than one Flint Hill batter off guard, an amazing catch by third baseman Natasha Wanjiru ’20 on a pop fly that felt like it was a mile high above her head, a great infield stop by second baseman Madalein Amoako ’22 on a hard hit grounder, and an awesome play by catcher Hannah Boone ’22 and Stowers also stopping a girl from stealing home on a pass ball.

During the game, the girls made solid contact at the plate, but nothing seemed to get through the infield until the third inning. In the first, Nicole Carino ’19 started the game with a nice grounder to third base, but couldn’t beat out the throw. Stowers hit a grounder to second base and reached first on an error, but was left on as the inning ended with a strike out. In the second inning, Halsey Ziglar ’19 made solid contact with the ball, hitting a grounder to shortstop. Then, Boone hit the ball so hard to Flint Hill’s first baseman that she didn’t have enough time to get her glove down and had to use her legs to stop the ball from leaving the infield. No runs were scored by Episcopal in the first two innings.

In the third inning, things were looking up as Amy Ma ’21 became the first runner on base for Episcopal by drawing a walk. Carino came up next and hit a grounder to the second baseman to advance Ma to second. With two outs in the inning, Wanjiru started a rally by hitting a well-placed grounder up the middle of the field, which scored Ma from second. Stowers was up next and hit a solid shot up the middle to advance Wanjiru to third. With Stowers on second and Wanjiru on third, Flora French ’21 comes to the plate and knocks the team’s third solid hit up the middle to score both Wanjiru and Stowers with a close play at the plate. Unfortunately, French was left on base at the end of the inning. Flint Hill was able to score enough runs to end the game in three innings.

The team finished the season with 1 win and 11 losses.
