Softball Wins First Game

The Girls Varsity Softball team started the season off with an amazing 17-7 win against Madeira.
The girls were excited to finally get to play their first game. The team started off strong in the first inning, scoring 5 runs by loading the bases and batting through the entire line-up. In fact, there was only one scoreless inning of the game in which the team didn’t get runners on the bases.

Tiffany Stowers ’20 pitched the entire game. She had a career high 19 strikeouts and only four walks. When Madeira was able to get a bat on Stowers’ pitch, the EHS defense was solid. Halsey Ziglar ’19 had two unassisted groundouts and had a great glove at 1st base. Stowers helped herself out when she caught a hard hit line drive up the middle and made a smart play to Flora French ‘21, who had the heads up to be covering 2nd base to get the runner caught off base. Natasha Wanjiru ’20 also had a tough ground ball hit to her at 3rd base. She kept her cool as she fielded it cleanly and stepped on 3rd for the force out. Hannah Boone ’22 was behind the plate in her first ever high school game as catcher. She had just been cleared one day prior from a concussion early in the season. She did a great job learning the game and was a pro at throwing runners out on drop third strikes.

At the plate, Stowers went 5 for 6 with several singles, a double and a beautiful out of the park home run to left center. On her next at bat following the homerun, the bases were loaded. Madeira decided to intentionally walk Stowers, which allowed a run to score. French came to the plate and ripped a double, which cleared the bases, scoring 3 runs. This was her second double of the game, on top of 2 singles. Ziglar also had 2 singles and a triple and went 4 for 5 for the game. Nicole Carino ’19 and Wanjiru both hit a single and a double, and drew a walk each. The final score of the game was 17-7, in 7 innings.
