Varsity Maroon Wins in Overtime

The girls varsity basketball team earned a thrilling overtime victory against cross-town rival, Potomac School on what proved to be quite a memorable Senior Night.
Although Potomac jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, a Haley Sabol '20 three-pointer and a Lucy Dixon '21 layup evened out the score. Stifling defensive pressure from Mary Ives Giblin '19 and Dymin Gerow frustrated the Panthers and led to a myriad of steals and layups. A Maya Thompson '20 layup and a baseline jumper by Dixon extended the Episcopal lead, and the first quarter ended with the Maroon up one. The early minutes of the second stanza was much of the same, as the home team battled to maintain their lead. Catie Wood '19 and Didi Tyree '19 were sensational on the left side of the zone defense, limiting Potomac's offensive opportunities with solid closeouts and box outs. At halftime, Episcopal led 32-22.

From the start of the third period, the team continued to push the ball in transition and get excellent shots from inside-outside movement. After a Sabol jumper pushed the lead to 12, the Panthers showcased their trademark resilience and began chipping away at the deficit. A 7-0 run forced Episcopal to call a timeout, but Potomac continued to tighten up on defense and force a number of turnovers. With just under a minute remaining, the visitors took a two point lead and forced an EHS turnover to regain possession of the ball. Refusing to let a Senior Night victory slip away, Giblin sprinted down, stole the ball from an unsuspecting Panther, and kicked it to Thompson for a game-typing layup with 34 seconds remaining. On the next possession, Dixon picked off a pass, held on tight as she was fouled, and hit two from the charity stripe with ice in her veins. The Panthers' talented post player, not ready to fold, made a terrific move to the basket and forced a Maroon foul, sending the game into OT off a pair of made three throws. Ironically, the overtime period was eerily similar to the last four minutes of regulation, as both teams traded baskets and fought very hard. Ultimately, Episcopal was able to secure a one point victory on what proved to be a memorable senior night!
