Boys Win State Title for Relay

The boys varsity track and field team competed at the State Tournament in Richmond.
Jamall Mensah '20 had an outstanding day, pacing alongside the fastest in the state and East Coast in the 55-meters. He handled his opening heat with ease, cruising through to take first place in his heat and advance to the finals. In the final, Mensah got out to his trademark remarkable start and pushed the field through 40 meters. He was just out-leaned at the line to take the 3rd place and All-State honors, matching his best time of the season. Close behind was Kamara, who is getting warmed up from an injury that has kept him from competition for most of the season. Kamara ran a personal best time to take 6th in the final. Ethan Yip '21 had a stellar day as well, matching his best time and just missing the 55-meter final by a few tenths of a second. He also had a stellar race in the 300-meters, running a personal best time and moving up to 7th from his 10th-place ranking going into the championships.

In the 4x200-meter relay, Mensah put on a show from the first lane, getting around the track in a personal best time and handing off to Dante Jackson '21 who maintained a solid distance for Aaron Lindsey '21. Veteran closer Baisama Kamara '19 was able to hold off a charging school in the final meters to take the second state title of the day for the Maroon.

The Boys 4x800m team had a strong day, placing 4th in one of the deepest fields in recent memory. (The highest-placing 4x800m in school history was in 2011 and finished runner up.) Tre Simmons '20 ran a huge personal best time for James Dixon '19 to run an all-time personal best on the anchor leg. Teammates also included Thanos Androus and Cameron Robinson '19Alex de Casteja '20 ran a personal best in the 500-meters and then led off the Maroon in the hunt for a title. Jackson, Robinson, and Dixon kept the EHS relay tradition by placing 3rd overall to finish off the meet.

More personal bests came throughout the day. Edward Powers '21, in his first varsity championship appearance, ran his all-time personal best by two seconds in the 500-meter race. Chris Denning '19 took off a huge chunk from his personal best 1600-meter time, running his all-time best in the event and taking 13 seconds off his previous best time.
