Girls Varsity End Tough Week With Loss to Maret

Much improved from last season, the Maret Frogs were ready for a fight on Thursday evening and EHS looked forward to the challenge.
From the opening minutes, Episcopal struggled with the full-court zone applied by the visitors. Despite an unusually high number of turnovers, the Maroon kept pace with the Frogs in the first stanza. Haley Sabol '20 wreaked havoc all over the floor and was virtually unstoppable. Teammate Maya Thompson '20 used her court vision to dish out gorgeous assists, and Dymin Gerow '20 caused a slew of Maret turnovers with her stifling defensive pressure. In the second quarter, though, Episcopal hit a wall and struggled to put the ball in the net. Scoring just six points in that stanza, the home team found themselves trailing 24-15 at the half.

Recognizing they would need to take better collective care of the ball to overcome this deficit, Episcopal did just that in the third period. The duo of Mary Ives Giblin '19 and Nora Huffines '20 offered poise at the guard positions, while on defense,Lily Arasaratnam '21 managed a huge block that brought the crowd to its feet. Down the stretch, the foul trouble that plagued the Maroon came back in haunting fashion, and the Frogs took full advantage. Forced to foul in the final 90 seconds, Maret showed confidence by knocking down free throws to extend their lead. Ultimately, time rand out and EHS suffered a 53-47 loss.
