EHS Goes 2-1 in Wrestling Quad Meet

In a quad meet at home on Friday, the Maroon hosted the defending IAC champion Landon Bears, as well as WCAC school Gonzaga and MIAA school Gilman.
All three schools had wrestled a challenging schedule to date and it showed in the way they competed as the Maroon went 1-2 on the day, losing to Landon 30-53 and Gilman 21-57, before beating Gonzaga 40-36.

William Smith '19 and Clay Sailor '21 both went 3-0. All of Smith's wins came by fall. His win against Gonzaga was particularly important as he moved up to 220 so we could cover the top two weight classes. Two points away from a tech fall, he made sure his last takedown was straight to near-fall so he could earn a fall. Sailor had two pins and a forfeit, dominating in both the matches he actually wrestled, doing a particularly nice job in the top position. Max Meyer '20 went 2-1, bumping to 285 in both his wins to help us cover that weight class. In his bout against Gonzaga, he stayed patient in a close match before getting an escape and hitting a cement job to put his opponent straight to his back. Chineme Agulanna '20 also went 2-1. Yoyo Lu '21 did not get a chance to wrestle but earned a forfeit against Gonzaga. Jay Kim'19 showed strong defense against Gilman, using a whizzer to put his opponent straight to his back and then pinning him with half-nelson. Nick Carosi '22 picked up a nice win over Gilman as he won a 4-2 decision. Despite the close score, he controlled the match throughout and demonstrated good situational awareness effectively stopping his opponent's attempts late in the bout. Hays Talley '21 lost a close decision against an evenly matched Gilman opponent. Gilbert Amason '20 earned an 8-0 major decision in a match he controlled from start to finish.

Bear Matheson '20 helped spark the win against Gonzaga with his 14-7 win. Down 4-2 late in the first and in bad position, he managed to get a take-down and back points. That sequence gave him all the momentum as he controlled the rest of the bout, nearly pinning his opponent. Conard Suppes '20 went 1-1 losing to a defending IAC champion and earning a forfeit. While Max Smith '22 bumped up to the 220 weight class against Gilman. He wrestled fearlessly and went for a trip nearly putting his opponent straight to his back. Unfortunately, he lost the ensuing scramble and ended up losing by fall, but the effort was great.
