Maroon Places Second in MASO Championship

Late January kicks off squash tournament season, so Saturday the boys varsity squash team traveled to Orange for the Mid-Atlantic Squash Organization Championship Tournament.
Due to weather concerns, the field of teams in attendance shrunk to six schools; this left the director to quickly adjust the usual bracket draw to a groups format. Episcopal arrived, were briefed on the new schedule of play, and focused on the out-of-the-ordinary task(s): play two simultaneous matches, wherein the group team with the best record advances to the finals. Due to seedings, EHS was pitted against Wakefield and St. Christopher's with three players rotating through each opponent until all nine matches against both teams were completed. The newness of the format kept the guys on their toes, and perhaps created some good excitement to channel towards competition.

Against Wakefield, Episcopal repeated their result from previous in the season. Against St. Christopher's, Episcopal hoped to better their previous result, where St. Christopher's won 5-4. The Order of play had 4s, 5s, and 6s starting off the day. While hard-fought, Episcopal managed only one win with Will Riddle '19 at #4. The Maroon next had 1s, 2s, and 3s take to the courts. Thomas Williamson '19 and Hansen Ogden '22 earned wins in this trio, bringing the head-to-head team count to 3-3. Either team would have to secure two more match wins to advance to the finals. As it turns out, the Episcopal ladder 7, 8, and 9 downed their Saint counterpart, giving the Maroon more than was needed to advance. Those last three players—Max Foulk '19, Andrew Kraut '21, and Case Sylvester '21—share Match of the Day honors for their ability to close out their counterparts.

In the finals, Episcopal faced Potomac (for the second time in three days). The result was almost identical to the previous match, as was the dedicated effort and character. Episcopal finished 2nd for the championship, bettering their pre-tournament seeding of #3.
