EHS Defeats Woodberry, Wins Amos-Willet Trophy

Coming out of a long winter break, the boys were committed to a return to form. The week of on-court work was singularly focused: Woodberry. The last match of 2018 was against the Tigers, and the Maroon were delivered their first match loss against their rivals since 2009.
But that was just the first first act in the home-and-away contest where the Amos-Willet Trophy was still in either school's grasp. For Episcopal to retain the Cup, the team would have to win with a higher match margin than the previous contest, or, if tied in matches, have a greater number of overall game wins than their opponents.

The Friday began with odd ladder players taking to court first; Max Foulk '19 (the Man of the Match) anchored the first win for EHS, and set the tone for his teammates to follow. Luke Mascatello '19 quickly followed with another 3-0 win. Episcopal jumped to an early 2-0 lead. EHS ladder positions 5 and 9 pushed their opponents well, but Woodberry edged them out and tied the overall contest at 2-2. The 2's, 4's, 6's and 8's began the second round of play. As has been the case all season, Hansen Ogden '22 dazzled the crowd and dizzied his opponent for a definitive 3-0 win (his opponent registered only eight total points all match); and then Andrew Kraut '21 bettered his counterpart 3-1, and moved Episcopal another team win closer to victory. Will Riddle '19 and Harrison Green '20 each narrowly lost in five games; this put the the score at EHS 4 - WFS 4. With one match left, the day and "the Cup" would be determined by the #1's. Captain Thomas Williamson '19 left nothing to chance; as he's done all season long, he won his match (and did so in 3 games).

Episcopal won the day, and, by tallying the games from both 5-4 contests, Episcopal won the Amos-Willet Trophy (36-29) for another year!
