EHS Varsity Basketball Rallies to Quell St. Andrew's Late Comeback Effort

The girls varsity basketball team faced off against familiar ISL foe, St. Andrew's (MD).
Despite the definitive size disadvantage, the team paired basketball IQ with speed and quickness to earn a 41-34 win over the Lions, bringing their overall record to 5-1 on the year.

The Maroon got off to a very slow start and struggled to find any offensive fluidity in the opening minutes of the contest. After falling behind 7-0, the squad finally started to gel and use their strong defense to create scoring opportunities. Dymin Gerow '20 led the charge on D, recording three steals in the first half alone. Mary Ives Giblin '19 offered stability at the helm of the offense and netted a critical three-pointer to ignite the team. Pulling down a total of nine boards in the contest, Maya Thompson '20 was a ferocious rebounder at the bottom of the zone and helped limit SAES's second chance opportunities. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, EHS found themselves ahead 22-10 over the visiting team.

Because St. Andrew's has tenacious competitors on their team, the Lions were able to nibble away at the lead in the third stanza and create a much closer game that Episcopal would have liked. A crucial trifecta from Haley Sabol late in the game gave EHS a more comfortable cushion, but the team knew they'd need to string together intelligent defensive plays to solidify the win. Lucy Dixon '21 heeded this call by showcasing heart and toughness when the team needed it most, and teammate Hannah Boone '22 brought smart play at the other end to propel the Maroon to a 41-34 victory over the Lions.
