The excitement was palpable in Centennial Gymnasium on Tuesday evening as the girls' varsity basketball team prepared to celebrate Senior Night. Despite the electric atmosphere, though, the squad was focused on competing with HolyChild, ranked #17 in the DMV and #4 in the ISL.
From the opening tip, Episcopal made it clear that this game would be an absolute dogfight. Erin Phillips '18 sank the first shot of the night for the home team, and that free throw was followed by a Maya Goree '18 three-pointer on the next possession. Kailyn Shepherd '19 and Lexi Weger '18 continued the team's run with a layup and trifecta, respectively, which forced a Cougar timeout. Throughout the half, the Maroon quelled each and every Cougar run with made bucket or defensive stop of their own. At the half, the score was 28-25 in favor of EHS.
HolyChild may have registered the first basket of the third quarter, but Episcopal answered with a vigorous 12-6 run in the next few minutes. Sophie Singletary '18 sank a deep three to extend the team's lead to four at the start of the final stanza. With less than a minute remaining, Goree exploded through two defenders for a power layup to tie the game. HolyChild, however, made some big plays of their own down the stretch to ultimately squeak by with a one point victory. Despite the heartbreakingly close score, however, the seniors continued to showcase strong leadership and grace; they had put in an incredible effort against one of the top teams in the region and rejoiced in the growth that they've shown in just a few short weeks.
