EHS Squashes Grasshoppers

The girls’ varsity basketball team returned to winning ways with a victory at Georgetown Day School.
The staff was proud of the way the squad competed, each person contributing something positive both on the court and on the bench.

It was immediately clear that Episcopal would dominate the Grasshoppers on their home court. Sophie Singletary ’18 opened up the scoring by finishing a beautiful pass from Dymin Gerow ’20. Kailyn Shepherd ’19 sank a deep three pointer to extend the lead further, and Maya Goree '18 swished another just as the first quarter buzzer sounded. The offensive production continued to pour in from every member of the squad, including back-to-back threes from Eleanor Winnants ’18. When the halftime buzzer sounded, the Maroon found themselves atop a 27-7 lead.

The second half was more of the same, though GDS did stage a brief comeback toward the end of the third quarter. However, the strong interior presence of Nora Huffines '20 and hot perimeter shooting from Catie Wood ’19 gave the visiting team an even more comfortable lead. Erin Phillips ’18 helped to quell the Grasshopper uprising by taking two charges on defense, while Lexi Weger ’18 created not only for herself in the paint, but also dished out a team-high five assists in the 47-20 victory.
