Maroon Track & Field Takes Medals in Private School Invitational
A small contingent of Maroon Track & Field competitors competed at the Private School Invitational on Saturday February 3rd at Georgetown Prep School and did not come home empty-handed.
Distance Relay Takes Silver
The Girls 4 x 800-meter team of Claire Boehm '20, Dawn Farquharson '18, Paige Hathaway '18 and Taylor Redd '18 got things started. Boehm led out the field with a strong first lap and handed off to Farquharson who ran just her second race at this distance. Farquharson latched on to rival school St Stephen’s & St Agnes and ran a smart race for the first three laps and then blasted her last lap handing off to senior veteran Hathaway, who continued her mission this season by running another season’s best in her leg. Fellow senior Redd anchored the Maroon in fine fashion sealing up the silver medal in the event.
Sprint Relay Also In Strong Form
Next on the track was the 4x200-meter relay where Episcopal brought some strong teams to continue to prep for the State Championships. Senior leader Bijee Jackson '18 led a group of young teammates in Janil Cohen '21, Regan Simmons '21and Nina Moore '20 to 5th place finish. Jackson also made a day of it, competing in the 55-hurdles where she advanced to the finals and the 300-meters where she ran just off of her personal best.
The boys 4x200-meter had a strong day to take the Silver medal in this closely contested event. Sam Kamara '19 led off with a strong leg to hand off even with the other teams. Jack Lee '21 was next up for the Maroon and he led a charge over the final turn that put the Maroon in first place. Barry Curtis '19 battled with another team who were looking to contest for the win. Curtis and Elijah Gaines '20 executed a flawless hand-off giving Gaines an extra step on the competition going into the first turn, bringing home the silver medal for the Maroon.
Formidable Individual Performances
John Pupel '18 had a strong showing in the 55-meter hurdles as he continuous to build his form for the State Championships. Brianna Williams '18 had another multivent day making the final of the 55-hurdles while also competing in the high jump event.
Records Broken for the day
Curtis and Lee, after a warm-up in the 4 x 200-meter, had remarkable races over 300-meters. Lee just bested his time from one year ago solidifying his strong form for the season and Curtis lowered his best time in the event by close to two seconds. Hathaway also had a new season’s best in the 800-meters and a personal record in the 500-meters event later in the day. Zeddy Williams '21 also had a strong day in the 1000-meter event taking home the bronze medal and chopping five seconds off of his personal best time in the event.
