Formidable Foe Sidwell Dominates Maroon

The girls' varsity basketball team suffered a tough loss to Sidwell Friends. With the loss, the squad drops to 9-6 on the season.
In the first three quarters of play, the well-matched teams scrapped and fought for possession after possession and showcased a great deal of grit and resilience. Every time one squad would go on a run, the other would answer back with one of their own. For Episcopal, Sophie Singletary '18 was a true playmaker, dishing out five assists at the helm of the offense. Kailyn Shepherd '19 was also masterful with the ball in her hands, using her athleticism to get by every Quaker in her way. Dymin Gerow '20 and Erin Phillips '18 fiercely combined for 17 boards (nine of which were defensive) and showed immense toughness in the paint throughout the night. Lexi Weger '18, mauled by Sidwell defenders whenever she had the ball in her hands, battled on the interior with the opposing post players and managed several blocks at critical moments. With a total team effort fueling their momentum, EHS found themselves trailing by just two points at the half.

In the third stanza, the team turned up its defensive tenacity, holding our opponent to just seven points. It was the final stanza of the night, though, that proved to be the Achilles heel; Sidwell hit their offensive stride and seemed to make every shot they took. And while Episcopal got fantastic looks at the rim, the team struggled to convert on many high percentage bunnies down the stretch. In the end, it would be the Quakers who walked away with a 55-46 victory.
