Girls Varsity BBall's Second Game is First Championship Win

The Maroon face hilltop rival St Stephen's & St Agnes in a close championship game.
The Maroon struck first in the championship game as Maya Goree '18 hit a pair of free throws, but the Saints quickly responded with a pair of buckets of their own and sent the clear message that this was going to be a fight. The two hungry teams traded baskets for the majority of the first half, each taking advantage of mini runs throughout. Offensively, SSSAS honed in on our defensive gaps and miscommunications, but our team continued to respond and make adjustments. Erin Phillips '18 played outstanding defense during this time, doing her best to clog the paint and fight for rebounds. At the end of the first half, the Saints controlled a 29-27 lead.

The persistent Saints came out firing in the third quarter by picking apart Episcopal's defense and scoring four unanswered points. It seemed as though the momentum had permanently shifted in favor of the home team until Sophie Singletary '18 and Dymin Gerow '20 breathed life into the squad with their scrappy defense and relentless rebounding efforts. While our shots still weren't falling, our defense finally began to create our offense midway through the final period. A huge three-pointer by Weger with under five minutes to play was the final nail in the coffin for SSSAS, and the Maroon were dubbed 2017-18 tournament champions!
