The EHS girls' varsity soccer squad took on the rival Saints on the turf at the SSSAS upper school campus on Friday for the 10th annual Seminary Hill Cup match.
The intensity stayed at fever pitch from the opening whistle. Episcopal struggled to gain momentum in the first half, with the ball quickly changing possession repeatedly. A number of attempts by the home side deflected off of the posts or ended up in Goalkeeper Lindy Moss's '19 hands. The halftime whistle was welcomed by both sides as a time to regroup and refine tactics. The speed and power of EHS allowed them to focus on the need to change the point of attack, and serve balls deeply behind the home side's back line.
Opportunities began to open up as EHS outpaced their rivals. Several skirmishes in the box were thwarted by the Saints and the most promising moment of the match came when Isabelle Holt '18 was able to beat her defender for a one on one with the goalkeeper. The expertly placed shot was low to the corner, but only skimmed the back post out of bounds. EHS took control of the attack for the last 20 minutes and two consecutive overtimes, but unfortunately could not beat the SSSAS defense. At the final whistle, both sides looked back on 90 minutes of spectacular play worthy of the 10th Annual Seminary Hill Cup with pride and exhaustion.
