Maroon Tennis Defeats Bishop O'Connell
On Wednesday, an improved and feisty Bishop O’Connell came to Episcopal ready to get a win with the Virginia state rankings on the line. As the match began, it was clear that this was going to be a close one. We were missing a part of our #1 doubles team, so we shifted all of the teams, which made things a bit trickier. Midway through the contest, there were no clear leaders, and at one point O’Connell led in 6 of the 7 matches. The girls stayed focused however, and made some comebacks to regain the leads in several positions. In singles O’Connell took the top two matches, while Lily Dolan '20 held on at #3 singles for a win and Lilly Whitner '19 turned around a 7-8 deficate into a 10-8 win for a 2-2 split. In doubles, O’Connell won at #1 10-8, while Maddie Blalock ’19 and Sam Fanning '19 won the second position handily. This contest would come down to #3 doubles, where Olivia Armfield '20 and Grace Moog '19 were struggling to stay in the match (their first as a team in regular season ) , but they pulled it together, and came back to force a 10-10 tiebreak, and won the tiebreak 7-4 for the clinching match. A very close and exciting match, and a great team victory!
