Focus, Strong Defense Bring Victory over Potomac

On Tuesday afternoon, The Maroon faced off against league opponent Potomac.
From the start, EHS was focused and controlled the game with quick passing and a strong defensive presence. The Maroon and the Panthers both had offensive opportunities throughout the first half but no one was able to break through with a goal.

EHS came out on the attack after halftime and scored the first goal of the game just over five minutes into the second half. Eleanor Winants '18 scored on a direct shot on a penalty corner with the assist from Erin Phillips '18. The Maroon held strong on the defensive end following an offensive surge from the visitors who were trying to answer with a goal of their own. They broke through the Maroon defense with just over nine minutes remaining in the contest to tie the score. EHS regrouped and made a final push to end the game in regulation with four offensive penalty corners in the final minutes of the game but couldn’t find the back of the cage.

At the beginning of the 10-minute overtime period, the Maroon fielded their seven players who pushed through their fatigue and stayed composed in an effort to strike quickly and end the game. After back-and-forth breakaways for both teams, the Panthers had a few offensive penalty corner opportunities and the Maroon were able to stave off the attack. With just over three minutes left in the period, the Maroon had yet another scoring opportunity on a breakaway and Winants ended the game in a emphatic fashion with a reverse chip shot that soared past the goalie and into the net. Throughout the game, the Maroon were led defensively by Halsey Ziglar '19 who finished the game with 11 saves and was supported by defensive saves from Jane Hill '20 and Mary Ives Giblin '19.
