Episcopal High School defeated St. Anne’s Belfield 5-0 in boys’ varsity soccer on Saturday afternoon in the third place match of the Maroon and Black Invitational Cup. The Maroon took control from the start through strong possession play from central midfielders Joe Mutscheller ’18 and Sam Kamara '19 combining, with forwards Thanos Androus ’20 and Jacob Beckner '18. Their attacking play earned four early corners in the opening minutes. The first goal of the game came from a corner kick in the 19th minute when center back Meron Tekeste ’19 drove a ball to the near post to Cole Wise '19 who volleyed home into the top corner of the net. With less than three minutes to go in the half, Episcopal doubled the lead with Herbert Gray '20 finishing an excellent pass from Androus.
EHS added a third goal in the first minute of the second half when an excellent ball from Androus to Kamara caused a desperate clearing attempt from a STAB defender that wound up ricocheting into the goal. Kamara officially added his name to the score sheet in the 47th minute finishing a pass from Gray. The fifth and final goal was scored from the penalty spot by Tekeste who had drawn a foul to earn the spot kick.
It was an excellent match by the back four of Wise, Tekeste, Rudy Bissot ’19, and Cam Robinson ’19, who limited STAB to just seven shots. Ransdell McCaulley '20 played an excellent game in goal to earn his first varsity win by shutout. Joe Mutscheller '18 and Rudy Bissot '19 were selected to the All-Tournament team.
