Boys JV Soccer Loses to Georgetown Prep in Final Minutes
Final score: 3-2.
The boys' junior varsity soccer team faced Georgetown Prep in a tightly contested battle that turned out to be some of the best soccer the team has played all season.
The first half began on a high note for Maroon with multiple scoring opportunities. The combination of Michael Grogan '19, Jinsoo Kim '18, and Collin Hwang '19 continues to put pressure on defenses. All three had scoring opportunities in the first twenty minutes, but came up empty handed.
The game went back and forth with Prep putting Episcopal on its heels on multiple occasions.
Miles Thompson '18 continues to grow into a defensive role and had many outstanding plays yesterday breaking up dangerous attacking situations. John Woodward '18 continues to work hard and play a key role in the back line. Thomas Grier '20 held down the fort at left back, providing solid play yet again. Will Gibert '18 also continues to play a key role in the back line, breaking up dangerous attacking plays and finding ways to get forward in transition.
Unfortunately, Georgetown Prep broke away with twelve minutes left in the first half and scored off of a right side cross. Maroon picked their heads up and continued to fight hard. Collin Hwang '19 played a beautiful cross from the left side with four minutes remaining, and Jinsoo Kim '18 scored off of a deflection. The game was tied at the half. The Maroon were in a great spot going into the second half and the team came out on fire. Just one minute into the half, Collin Hwang '18 played a ball that was deflected and Cole Wise '19 was there to blast one of the most amazing shots of the season past the keeper to put Maroon up 2-1. Unfortunately, in the next minute Georgetown Prep responded with a goal played near post from the left side of the field. Score tied, 2-2. The rest of the second half was a grudge match with both teams generating dangerous attacking chances.
The second half saw great play from Collin Fitzpatrick '19, who made four excellent decisions to come quickly off his line to break up dangerous attacking plays, and one big save that kept the game tied! Jared Andreala '20 saw important minutes coming off the bench to generate great attack. Stuart Thorton '19 played an important defensive role seeing a solid run in the second half. Thomas Williamson '19 generated significant attack in the midfield and was key in getting back on defense. Jack Light '19 and Herbert Gray '20 remain the backbone of working the ball through the midfield with conscientious and creative play on both sides of the ball. Both had multiple looks at the back of the net.
In a heartbreaking ending, Georgetown Prep created an attacking chance in the air that resulted in a goal with just 1:30 remaining on the clock. Maroon was unable to equalize and lost a tough match with a final score of 3-2.
