Varsity Softball Shuts Out Sidwell in Three Innings

The girls varsity softball team picked up their second win of the season—and first divisional win—on Thursday against Sidwell Friends.
Tiffany Stowers ’20 pitched a no-hitter and only walked one batter. She also had six strike-outs in the three-inning game. With only one error in the game, the Maroon's defense kept Sidwell’s run count to zero. Nicole Carino ’19 and Madi Register ’18 each made great defensive plays that tested their range at second base and provided crucial outs for the team. First baseman Halsey Ziglar ’19 also had several saves on bad throws to keep Sidwell runners off the bases. On offense the girls came out swinging right from the start, scoring four runs in the first inning. They were highly selective at the plate, drawing walks and hitting good pitches to get on base. Highlights include Register’s 3-run RBI, a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt from Judy Liu '18 to move runners into scoring position, and two solid hits by Carino.

Several subs were made in the game to give a variety of players in the line-up a chance to play. Both the starters and non-starters all did a great job of getting runners on and then scoring. Allison Duenas ’20, Flora French ’21, Melanie Hoffmann '18, Liu, Register, Natasha Wanjiru ’20, and Lilly Wilcox ’18 each scored one run. Carino scored two runs, and Stowers and Barrett Carney ’19 each scored three runs. The final score of the 3-inning game was 15-0.
