Girls Team Out in VISAA Quarterfinals

All year, this team has competed against some of the toughest basketball programs in not only the region but the country. It's fitting, then, that the final test of the season come against one of these elite programs, Bishop Ireton. Though the team suffered a season-ending loss to the Cardinals in the VISAA State Quarterfinals, it would be remiss to ignore the heart and passion poured forth from each player in this contest. Three months ago, we did not have the collective "team toughness" to even compete with this formidable opponent; last night, we gave them a heck of a run!

After falling behind 17-5 in the first quarter, EHS went on a scoring rampage and proved they could hang with BI. In her last high school basketball game, Lexi Weger '18 was an unbelievable force, scoring points in the paint, draining threes, and finishing continuations at the charity stripe. Sophie Singletary '18 led on the defensive end with numerous tips and steals in our zone defense while Dymin Gerow '20 and Maya Goree '18 added powerful post moves and lightening quick jumpers in the paint. Despite the slow start, Episcopal found themselves down just 13 at the half.

To begin the third quarter, Kailyn Shepherd '19 scored off a beautifully executed inbounds play and Weger followed with a bucket on the next possession to pull the team within nine. Erin Phillips '18 gave her best effort on the glass, moving BI's 6-3 monster out of the paint with incredible boxouts. Despite these sensational moments, however, the Cardinals' hot shooting proved insurmountable, and EHS eventually dropped the contest 62-47.
