Maroon Defeats St. Gertrude in First Round of VISAA Tournament
The girls varsity basketball team enjoyed a 54-37 victory over St. Gertrude (Richmond) in the first round of the VISAA State Tournament evening.
It took a few moments for the squad to shake the weekend cobwebs, allowing the Gators to score several uncontested layups and open threes. After a timeout to regroup, though, they responded beautifully and recommitted to working harder, together. Sophie Singletary '18 orchestrated the offense beautifully, sometimes looking to attack and other times looking to hit the open teammate. Lexi Weger '18 also found her rhythm early on in the contest by not only sinking effortless buckets but also dishing out a team-high of six assists. Dymin Gerow '20 led the defensive charge in the first half, while Kailyn Shepherd '19 was seemingly unstoppable on the offensive end. At halftime, the Maroon led 24-15.
To open the third quarter, Maya Goree '18 found Wegerfor another trifecta to extend the team's lead. Shepherd followed the play with one of three blocks on the night, leading to yet another Singletary layup. Erin Phillips '18 was a monster in the paint and downright refused to let her defensive assignment sneak in for any offensive boards. Nora Huffines '20 and Eleanor Winants '18 came off the bench to contribute gorgeous steals and stellar defense in the team's final home game of the season. The coaching staff could not have been more proud of the total team effort!
