The girls' varsity basketball team trekked to Oakton, Va. for a brawl with second-ranked Flint Hill.
Though the Huskies handed us a sizable loss just three weeks prior, the team was focused and prepared to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the season.
From the tip, EHS came out with determination and hustle, outscoring the home team 21-11 in the first quarter. Kailyn Shepherd '19 and Dymin Gerow '20 attacked the rim with zeal and athleticism, forcing several early fouls while extending Episcopal's lead. Flint Hill regrouped in the second quarter and dominated the boards on both ends of the floor, which led to several three-pointers and tough jump shots. Despite Flint Hill's defensive tenacity, Lexi Weger '18 was a beast on the interior, converting passes from Sophie Singletary '18 and shots from every position on the floor. At the half, EHS led 29-26.
The coaches utilized the halftime discussion to reiterate what it would take to beat this formidable opponent: a concerted rebounding effort from all five players on the court, poise to combat their defensive pressure, and a decision to commit to all the "little things". As expected, the Huskies came out with fire in the third quarter, netting six unanswered points to steal the lead. The Maroon remained calm, however, and showed tremendous mental fortitude. Gerow stopped the bleeding by taking a charge, Maya Goree '18 hit a momentum-shifting three, and Weger's career-high 28 points completely confounded Flint Hill's defense. These big moments continued to pour in throughout the second half Scrambling and running out of time in the final quarter, the Huskies were forced to foul to regain possession of the ball. Seniors Goree, Singletary, and Weger solidified the win by going 5/6 from the charity stripe, and as the clock dwindled down to zero, the team celebrated a well-deserved 61-55 victory.
