Track & Field Squad Competes at JV State Finals

Episcopal sent a strong contingent of competitors to compete at the JV State Meet.
The Maroon showed up at St. Christopher’s with the goal of running some top times for the season and coming away with 1st place finishes in the relay events. The coaching staff passed on the 4 x 800-meter relays but continued the strong tradition of relay teams winning 3 of the 4 remaining relays to go along with a number of personal record times.

The girls 4 x 200-meter team took the host school St Catherine’s down to a photo finish, placing second by .03. Jump specialist Carmela Ribadeneira '21, Janil Cohen '21, Sofia Podjenski '20, and Sunny Miller '20 combined to set up this runner-up performance. Next up was the boys 4 x 200 and Alex De Casteja '20 led off and the team never looked back. Christian Storch '20, Herbert Gray '20 and Jack Moore '20teamed up for the first “W”of the meet.

de Casteja also took the only individual title for The Maroon, winning the 300-meter event with a super fast time that would have put him in the top 15 at the Varsity Championships. Also competing in the 300-meter race was Jack Moore '20 and Tyler Conklin '21 as well as Ruby Gregg '21 and Podjenski, who all ran personal best times. Some of de Casteja’s teammates finished just short of the gold medal with impressive performances of their own. Cohen ran a new personal best in the 55-meters to place runner-up. Kenny Driscoll '21 put in a hard final 200-meters in the 500-meter event to place 2nd, as well as Charlotte Breckenridge '20--who glided through her section with a time that placed her runner-up over all in the 500-meter race as well.

In the final races of the day, the 4x400 meter, with all teams up and ready to cheer their respective teams, EHS put on a strong display to place first in the final two races. Missy Brandt '20 led off with a superb final 150-meters to keep the team in the battle. Miller ran an all-time personal best in the second leg setting up freshman phenom Cohen to move the team into 1st place overall. Middle distance specialist Breckenridge maintained the lead and crossed the line in first place. On the boys side, reliable relay specialist Storch led off the Maroon and handed off to Driscoll, who handed off the baton with a lead to Edward Powers '21--who solidified their advantage over the field. Gray added to the legend of the EHS relay prowess by making the most of his 10 minutes notice that he would be needed on the 4x400-meter and ran the fastest split of the day and solidifying the 1st place finish in the final race of the day.
