Entering the Sidwell gymnasium Thursday evening, the team knew they'd need exemplary effort and focus to pull away with a victory. Not only were the Quakers ranked third in the ISL, but it was also Senior Night for the home team. Despite the circumstances, Episcopal was ready and excited to battle.
Sidwell wasted no time in feeding off the celebratory energy of the crowd as they opened with an 11-1 run that forced an Episcopal time out. After refocusing, the Maroon began to chip away at the deficit. EHS combatted the Quakers' defense by spreading the floor, moving the ball, and finding a variety of offensive options. Birthday girl Maya Goree '18 was especially magical during this run, finishing a couple of tough buckets in the paint. Fellow senior Sophie Singletary '18 was truly inspiring in the full court, effectively shutting down her player on defense and converting full-court layups on the other end. Lexi Weger '18 elevated the entire team with her tenacity at the top of the zone that befuddled Sidwell's guards. To end the first half, Goree netted two shots from the charity stripe to extend Episcopal's lead to 25-21.
As all great teams do, Sidwell made a rousing comeback in the third stanza: a 9-4 run to take the lead. EHS, however, remained poised in the face of adversity. A jumper by Dymin Gerow '20 was followed by back-to-back threes from Weger and Goree to effectively swing the momentum back in favor of the Maroon. The Quakers pulled within three points with four minutes remaining, but the Maroon made some big plays down the stretch to solidify the win: a backdoor layup by Gerow, a pair of free throws by Kailyn Shepherd '19, an offensive rebound by Weger were all instrumental in the team's 57-47 win.
