Maroon Falls to No. 1 Team in ISL

The girls varsity basketball team traveled to Georgetown Visitation for a brawl with the top team in the ISL. While the Cubs ultimately walked away with the win, there were many positives to be taken from the contest and the coaching staff was immensely proud of how each athlete competed until the final buzzer sounded.
Visitation struck first offensively, but EHS immediately responded with a Kailyn Shepherd '19 pull-up in the paint. The Cubs netted another jumper moments later, but Maya Goree '18 answered by sinking a tough layup in traffic. That's when Visitation showed why they're one of the top teams in the region: their tenacious defensive pressure led to a slew of points for the home team and made it difficult for the Maroon on the other end. Episcopal's scoring drought finally ended when Lexi Weger '18 hit a deep three to end the quarter, but the team still trailed 22-7. Weger opened up the second stanza by netting another trifecta, and the Maroon were once again reenergized. The Cubs continued their stifling press, though, and further extended their lead. At the half, Episcopal found themselves down 37-13.

After a halftime discussion centered on defensive rebounds and executing under pressure, EHS came out in the second half with a renewed sense of purpose. The team began attacking the seams of the zone instead of settling for jumpers, and this led to multiple open looks. An especially memorable one was when Shepherd threaded the needle and hit Dymin Gerow '20 with a no-look pass for two. Another came moments later, when Erin Phillips '18 found the stealthy Gerow cutting to the rim once again for another EHS bucket. Despite eventually falling by a score of 68-36, we celebrate the growth and improvements we made even in that short 32-minute timeframe.
