Girls Climbing Beats Foxcroft as Boys Team Falls Short of Woodberry

The varsity climbing team got a second chance against Woodberry Forest and Foxcroft School, who we had faced in a bouldering competition in Orange, Va., earlier in the season.
This time, the teams competed on neutral turf--EarthTreks in Rockville, Md.--for the first mixed format competition of the season, which included both top-rope climbing and bouldering. Each competitor used their scores from their best tall route and two best short problems.

Gracie Guest ’19 won the meet outright, scoring 31 points and holding the lone top spot on the leaderboard. She climbed 5.11b for her top-rope climb and V4 and V5 for her two bouldering problems – quite impressive. Jane Owen ’19, Mei Kuo ’19, and Juliet Faris ’19 each tied for eighth overall and second place for the girls with 27 points. Owen and Faris climbed 5.11b and V3, V4 for their scores. Kuo climbed 5.10d and dual V4’s. Arden Faires ’19 scored 18 using rented gear to score the fifth spot for varsity with 5.10c, V2, V2. Lilly Wilcox '18 was the dropped JV score with 14 points. The girls varsity totaled a commanding 130 points to beat Foxcroft’s 73.

The boys team this season is a small group, and with one of our top climbers out sick, it meant there were only six of them to try to best the Tigers. Paul Pivirotto ’19 and Collin Fitzpatrick ’19 tied for third overall and second in the boys’ standings with 28 points. They both climbed 5.11a and V3, V5 bouldering routes. Thomas Adkins ’20 had the next highest score on the board with 27 points from 5.10d and a pair of V4’s. Bobby Hood ’19 had a PR day with 22 points off 5.10c, V3, V3. Rob Deaton ’20 scored 18 from 5.10c and two V2’s. David Lee ’21 scored six and was the dropped score in his first outing as a varsity climber. The boys came very close to Woodberry, but lost 123 – 134.

One of the toughest parts of coaching climbing is picking the varsity group for each meet, trying to to anticipate who will have the best day of a very deep group of amazing female climbers. Nettie Webb ’18 and Barrett Carney ’19 should have been on the varsity with 23 points off 5.10d and a pair of V3 sends. Olivia Tucker ’19 scored 21 from 5.10d, V2, V3. Cindy Xin ’20, Wardie Cammack ’20, and Arabella Dixon ’21 each tied for what would have been varsity scores – 18 points on 5.10c and V2 boulders. The girls JV team won 98 to 46 over Foxcroft.

The remaining girls on the team climbed quite well also:
  • Bridget McAree ’21 – 17 points
  • Arianna Otoo ’21 – 16 points
  • Amy John-Terry ’21 – 14 points
  • Debby Lee ’21 - 13 points
  • Forbes Dudley ’21 – 13 points
