At the beginning of the match, team members paid tribute to and acknowledged the many on and off-court contributions made by the seven seniors from both schools, including our own Sabrina Teope '18, Janie Stillwell '18, Isabelle Holt '18, and Margaret Collett '18. The final home team match was bittersweet for the team’s seniors, all of whom have displayed excellent leadership throughout the squash season. The coaches would also like to thank the four leaders for bringing maturity and stability to the GVSQ team and wish them well as they begin a new chapter in their young lives only a few months from now.
After being on injured reserve for most of the season, the team welcomed back Pierson Gammage ’20 (#5) into the fold. In the first round of matches, Pierson, Trudy Holmes ’19 (#9) and Lilly Whitner '19 (#7) played smart, focused squash and won 3-0 matches. Mac Faughnan ’19 (#3) lost a close 12-14 first game, only to storm back and win the match 3-1. In the second round, Sabrina Teope '18 (#4), Lindsey Harrison ’19 (#6), and Karla Domingues ’20 (#2) displayed a combination of powerful strokes and superb strategy in dominating their opponents 3-0. Showing grit and determination, Jonesy Wilbanks ’19 (#8) fought back after losing the first game to win her match 3-1.
Nicole Carino ’19 (#1) played a five-game thriller in which most points were fiercely contested. Although she narrowly lost 3-2, in arguably her best match played this season, she proved why she is our top player. For her efforts and good sportsmanship, team captains awarded her the “Player of the Match” award.
In the exhibition matches, pitted against higher-seeded players playing their second match of the day, Colby Grover ’19 (#14) easily won 2-0 while Lilly Schmactenberger ’19 (#12) came from behind to secure a 2-1 win. Margaret Collett ’18 (#10), Isabelle Holt ’18(#11), and Lily Dolan ’20 ((#13) played very well before falling 0-2 in closely-fought games.
