Fresh off of final exams (and with only one full team practice in the last week), Episcopal opened up the Bullis Holiday Tournament with a fundamentally sound, athletic team from St. John's.
EHS had to shake off some rust after the Vikings jumped out to a 10-4 lead, including a pair of triples that left the Maroon scrambling. After a timeout to settle down, EHS answered with a 8-2 run of their own led by the hot shooting of Kaylin Shepherd '19 and Ryan Shepherd '21. The two teams continued to battle in the second, as Lexi Weger '18 showcased her prowess inside with several buckets of her own. Kaylin's layup put Episcopal up by just two at the conclusion of the first half.
Maya Goree '18 opened up the third stanza with hot shooting early, but St. John's fought back ferociously with a late run of their own. At this time, the fatigue visibly set in on the Episcopal bench; we begin to make uncharacteristic turnovers and lacked communication on the defensive end. The Vikings also got hot from the perimeter in the second half, knocking down some momentum-shifting threes and layups with contact in the lane. Despite a valiant comeback effort in the closing minutes, it wasn’t enough for the maroon; the squad was handed its first loss of the season at the hands of St. John's, 60-56.
